About KeeptheHabitat Projects

KeeptheHabitat works with Indonesian State-owned forestry enterprises and private forestry businesses which have been licensed by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.
KeeptheHabitat’s detailed project plans are approved by the Indonesian Government, firstly in a Memorandum of Understanding and subsequently in a legally binding agreement with the forest concession holder.

KeeptheHabitat implements its projects through three plans; the Habitat Protection Plan, the Habitat Rehabilitation Plan and the Community Plan. Every project includes these key plans and each is tailored for the specific local environmental and community needs. The plans are implemented under a legally binding detailed Service Agreement between KeeptheHabitat and the forest concession holder.

KeeptheHabitat provides governance and oversight of each project on behalf of investors. We employ independent experts to monitor the progress of the projects and to recommend improvements. All project expenditure is audited by international auditors.

About KeeptheHabitat Project Plans
The Habitat Protection Plan defines the geographical areas, resources, expertise and methods used to protect the virgin forest from illegal logging and fire, and plans for the rehabilitation of logged-over forest areas.

The Habitat Protection Plan is implemented by:
  • Immediate cessation of all illegal logging and clearing of vegetation
  • Immediate application of personnel and resources to prevent illegal logging and poaching now and for the future
  • Using satellite monitoring of illegal activities
  • Delivery of community education programmes for wide support of forest protection
  • Application of forest management methods to minimise other forms of disturbance, especially fire, and invasive species
  • Scientific assessment of forests, habitats, biodiversity, endangered and threatened species
  • Providing regular progress reports on implementation of the Plan.

The Habitat Rehabilitation Plan defines the areas, time frame and methodology for rehabilitating both logged-over and degraded forests in the project area.

The Habitat Rehabilitation Plan is implemented by:
  • Building on the scientific assessment established in the Habitat Protection Plan
  • Educating and training new workers in rehabilitation techniques
  • Stimulating local businesses to provide project services
  • Establishing local nurseries for replanting with indigenous species or others as appropriate
  • Utilising enrichment planting techniques where appropriate
  • Replanting in fire affected and degraded forest areas
  • Stimulating development of sustainable forest industries
  • Providing alternative community timber resources such as fuelwood
  • Applying expert methods for protection of endangered and threatened species
  • Using satellite monitoring of rehabilitation progress
  • Providing regular progress reports on implementation of the Plan

The Community Plan defines the needs, projects, community infrastructure and priorities of local forest dependent communities.

The Community Plan is implemented by providing:
  • Expert assessment of location, population and profiles of affected communities
  • Community consultation to establish needs and priorities including health, education and environmental projects
  • Support for local business development and employment to stimulate sustainable local economies, e.g. ecotourism, non timber forest products such as rattan, flowers, forest fruits and medicinal products
  • Community fuelwood plantations
  • Support for skills development, training and scholarships
  • Support for research to improve project designs and outcomes
  • Support for locals to be engaged in implementation of the Habitat Protection and Habitat Rehabilitation Plans
  • Regular progress reports on implementation of the Plan.

KeeptheHabitat is committed to maximising the skills of local Indonesian organisations and relies on the experience and abilities present within local organisations.
We will not send teams of foreign experts to run projects. However, we will bring in specialist advice where needed.
We have accredited PT Empat Delapan Saudara in Indonesia to work closely on our behalf with forest concessions holders and expert organisations to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of our projects.
We will ensure the strength and sustainability of the projects through governing the complete chain of project activities from legal agreements to implementation on the ground and independent verification and reporting to investors.
